Cuturing Curiosity: Visual Communication at the Intersection of Biotechnology and Design

During my internship, I observed that BIOTECH produced valuable research and conducted numerous extension and public engagement activities, yet many of these efforts were communicated through fragmented visual materials with limited consistency across platforms. Publication designs, photography, website content, and promotional materials often varied in style and presentation, making it difficult to establish a cohesive institutional identity. While the scientific content was credible and impactful, communicating complex biotechnology concepts to diverse audiences remained a challenge without a unified visual communication strategy. This highlighted the opportunity to strengthen public understanding, institutional recognition, and audience engagement through more intentional and strategic design.

To address these communication challenges, I contributed to the development of visual communication materials that supported BIOTECH's science communication and public engagement initiatives. My work included producing motion graphics, publication materials, photography, event documentation, website content, social media assets, and branding recommendations that translated scientific information into engaging and accessible visual content. I also proposed foundational communication resources, including publication templates, a visual identity framework, and branding recommendations aimed at improving consistency across BIOTECH's communication channels. These outputs were designed not only to enhance visual appeal but also to strengthen scientific literacy, improve audience engagement, and establish a recognizable institutional identity.
Institute of Biotechnology (BIOTECH), University of the Philippines Los Baños, is a premier research institution dedicated to advancing biotechnology through innovative research, technology development, and knowledge transfer to support agriculture, industry, environmental sustainability, and national development.

As a Multimedia Arts intern, my role extended beyond creating visual materials. I served as a bridge between scientific knowledge and public understanding by applying design principles to communicate biotechnology in ways that were accurate, accessible, and engaging. Working alongside researchers and communication professionals allowed me to translate complex scientific concepts into visual narratives that supported BIOTECH's mission of research, innovation, and technology transfer. My contributions demonstrated how strategic visual communication can complement scientific excellence by improving accessibility, building institutional credibility, and fostering greater public appreciation of biotechnology. Through this experience, I recognized that effective science communication is not an addition to research but an essential component of ensuring that scientific discoveries reach and benefit the communities they are intended to serve.
